On the Web, Netgear provide a good manual for using the GS724 smart switch. But it assumes knowledge of how to map that information into the networking situation. Others have provided such maps for single network configurations. This tutorial covers multiple network configurations, implementing each of them on the switch, and discussing the results obtained.
The same devices are arranged into different networks. The switch is demonstrated providing a network hub, path between two network address spaces, and as an access control via routing. ISO network layers 2 and 3 relating to the switch by using VLANs are explored. Some other apparently odd behaviours of the switch not mentioned in the Netgear manual are examined.
It is anticipated this tutorial will expand as more of the capacilities of the switch become needed.
