Dual booting Ubuntu server on a Mac Pro cylinder

Successful installation of Ubuntu Vivid Vervet server as a dual boot with OS X Yosemite on a Mac Pro cylinder of late 2013 vintage is described. The server version of Ubuntu was used to maximize the configurability of the resulting system.

Contained in the downloadable document is an overview of efforts reported on the web with respect to installing Ubuntu on the Mac Pro cylinder. Then failed efforts to use USB connected devices as the Ubuntu boot are described, which led to the successful approach using the SSD and the rEFInd boot manager on the Mac Pro.

The version of Ubuntu server used did not support all attributes of the Mac Pro. Starting from a list of the component make up of the Mac Pro, an overview of the support available is given together will how additional support could be obtained.
